Fascinating Science Subscription Boxes For Kids

Science can be a hard subject to teach and to get kids excited about. I was one of those kids that struggled to get excited about it! Science did not interest me much and it was hard to want to do it. But done right, it can become a favorite part of the day. We’ll tackle why we should do science, how can we do it at home, and some recommended science subscription boxes for kids. If you are curious about what a subscription box IS read this first.

What is the importance of science for kids?

OK, so the word science isn’t anything new or unknown. We’ve all heard of science. From there though, our paths may be quite different. The experiences we have had with science may greatly affect the way we view it, whether that be positive or negative. Depending on our like or dislike, we may be more or less involved in helping our kids learn about science topics and try science-related experiments.

Can you relate? Think back to your days in school and the thoughts you had when ‘science’ was mentioned. Sadly, mine were usually negative. I’m not really sure why! I just didn’t “like” science and didn’t want much to do with it. After running my own classroom and now continuing to learn I see the positive impact science learning can have on kids, I am definitely rooting more for the “Let’s Do Science!” team.

There are many benefits to kids learning about and doing science. What are those? Oh things like helping kids develop their senses and learn to have their own opinion based on observations. These can go a lot farther than a science experiment.

Picture your child swirling water in a homemade tornado. They have to turn it this way and that to figure out how to get the water spinning the right way to create the tornado effect. As the water goes down, air comes up. It’s from their own observations, trial and error, that they figure it out. Fast forward several years down the road and now your child is faced with figuring out how to fix a broken pipe under their sink, they will likely need to try a few different things (there’s that trial and error again) until they figure it out.

Some benefits are things we wouldn’t always connect to science, like learning how to communicate, organize and focus. Life lessons, right?! They also have many opportunities to practice problem-solving, teamwork and pushing through when things get hard. Some great things to learn while doing some pretty cool experiments!

How does science affect our daily lives?

Does science really impact our lives every day?? The short answer is…. yup!

Let me share a common morning routine as an example.

The alarm clock goes off and soon after silencing it, you stumble over and flip the light on. You check your cell phone for any missed calls or messages. Then you make your way to the kitchen and pour a glass of clean water.

Bam. Just in the first 5 minutes of waking up science has already played a role in your day! Things we (me included!) take for granted. A quick review: alarm clock, electricity, cell phone, clean water. Science plays a huge role in the conveniences we enjoy every day! So yes it definitely does affect our daily lives and we’d love to help our kids understand it better!

How can parents help with science at home?

Here are some tips to help. Try a few out!

1. Do science things together. Remember back when your kids were toddlers and your kids always wanted to be doing whatever you were doing? Now’s your chance to dig into that desire to connect and be like you!

2. Encourage your sons and daughters to get involved in science. It can sometimes be favored for one or the other.

3. Get science materials (see subscription boxes below).

4. Give them room and time to explore. These things take some experimenting, you know, the trial and error stuff. Encourage your child to keep trying and finding new ways to solve something. It may be best to let them be and give them the time to figure it out by themselves.

5. Be prepared for messes. Some experiments and exploring are just hands-on and they might get a little dirty! Plan ahead and have them work outside if it’s extra messy or wear old clothes that you don’t care as much about.

Where can I get science materials for my kids?

That brings up to the topic at hand. Science subscription boxes. One fun way to get science materials is to have them delivered to your door. Every month, a box full of science projects arrives at your doorstep, complete with instructions. It saves you time and energy from having to come up with each idea and finding the right materials to use.
